Life Apparel recently joined forces with i=Change to contribute a portion of each sale to one of three great causes, as selected by the customer.
One of the charities is the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF), a well-known and well-loved organisation in and around Australia’s First Nations community. And with very good reason. Founded by Mary-Ruth Mendel, a Speech Language Pathologist, and Kim Kelly, this not-for-profit company is quite literally changing lives on a daily basis.
For those who've been fortunate enough to have received a formal education growing up, it can be easy to forget about the importance of literacy and numeracy in our everyday lives. In a modern world that relies heavily upon these skills, imagine what your life would look like without the ability to read, write or solve basic mathematical equations. These skills alone determine our ability to find work, seek further education and to live and travel independently.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are often overlooked in the Australian literacy and numeracy system. A lack of learning opportunities and access to resources in the early stages of children’s development goes on to affect their entire adult lives and, in turn, the broader community.
The ALNF is working to "(transform) lives through community-driven, ground-breaking and best practice literacy programs. Working in English and Indigenous First Languages, ALNF is committed to creating sustainable, long-term change.
Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books can be scarce and literacy levels are often much lower than anywhere else in Australia.
...Our purpose is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new, culturally appropriate books – with a focus on early literacy and first language - but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories, in the languages they choose.” - Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation
In partnership with the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation through i=Change, Life Apparel supports projects that empower, protect and provide education those in need. You can read more about our partnership with i=Change here.
