Hooded garments have been around for hundreds of years, but the hoodie that we all know and love is believed to have first been produced by clothing brand Champion in the 1930s and was marketed to labourers working in freezing cold warehouses in and around New York City.
A huge part of the surge in the hoodie's popularity during this time can be attributed to its appearance in the film Rocky. The hoodie took off around this time in the 1970s when it first became associated with hip-hop and skater culture. Hip hop culture was developing in New York City around this time, and was exposed to the wider public when it was embraced by New York’s high-fashion scene. And who could blame them? The hoodie’s timeless functionality and effortless style is hard to deny.
The humble hoodie thrives in the Nineties
The modern term hoodie that we all know today was coined in the 1990s and the world has never been the same since. By the 90’s, the hoodie had evolved into a symbol of isolation, rebellion and a display of academic spirit (in the case of university jumpers). Today, the hooded jumper is now one of the most commonly seen items in daily fashion, for both men and women alike, with most wardrobes including at least one or two (or ten) variations of this snuggly classic.
