It's Indigenous Literacy Day!

It's Indigenous Literacy Day!

They say that knowledge is power, and in today’s world, this couldn’t be more true.

Can you imagine not being able to text, email, use social media or worse than that - not being able to read vital information like street signs or warning labels? Can you imagine how this might affect your life, your safety, your education and career prospects? Sadly, this is a reality for many people living in remote Indigenous communities.

Fortunately, the good people of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (or ILF) are out there helping to change this. Since starting out in 2004, the ILF has been working hard to raise awareness of the need to support literacy in the remote Indigenous communities of Australia.

We at Life Apparel have supported the foundation in the past and will continue to do so, as they need all the community support they can get in order to continue their invaluable work.

Which is what today is all about. Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. The day's activities are designed to focus attention on the disadvantages experienced in remote communities and encourage the rest of Australia to raise funds and advocate for more equal access to literacy resources for remote communities.

Indigenous Literacy Day is all about raising awareness and in turn, raising funds. This funding is needed for purchasing tens of thousands of books and literary resources for kids living in the remotest parts of the country, helping to improve the lives and opportunities for countless Indigenous Australians.
